« La biodécouverte marine dans les eaux irlandaises (et au-delà) » par Olivier P. Thomas (Galway univ., Irlande)

Abstract :

The establishment of a marine biomaterial repository in Ireland (www.imbd.ie) represented a key component in our strategy to describe and sustainably use the marine bio- and chemodiversity of the Irish seas. Even though temperate to cold waters are largely underestimated in marine biodiscovery, we will present our recent findings on different types of marine invertebrates inhabiting the Irish coasts. Guanidine alkaloids and sulphur compounds were isolated from common worms, while a new peptide was isolated from a sponge, phenolic compounds from a solitarian ascidian and meroterpenoids from a brown alga. At a time when global change is largely affecting our oceans and their ecosystems a more sustainable use of our marine bioresources is needed and we will show all the benefits of the construction of an accessible marine biomaterial repository. Finally we will present our first results obtained from the Tara Pacific expedition where we are in charge of the metabolomics approach developed on the coral holobiont affected by climate change (https://fondationtaraocean.org/en/expedition/tara-pacific/).
