Former director of the INRAE Pathologie Végétale research unit (2014-2020), expert for ANSES, Ecophyto CSO R&I and CTPS, current vice-president of the Organisation Internationale de Lutte Biologique et Intégrée, section Ouest Paléarctique (2021-2025) and corresponding member of the Académie d’Agriculture de France
Abstract:
Plant disease control using micro-organisms has been the subject of intensive study over the last few decades, leading to the identification and development of biocontrol agents as commercial products used by farmers. These biocontrol agents can limit the development or even suppress plant pathogens, and thus protect plants by direct or indirect means. However, their protective efficacy is generally considered to be highly variable in the field. Various biotic and abiotic factors could explain this variability in efficacy. Among these factors, the possible resistance of plant pathogens to biocontrol agents is still poorly documented, compared with resistance to other control methods used in the field (fungicides, varietal resistance). This presentation highlights current knowledge concerning the variability of plant pathogen susceptibility to biocontrol agents and its possible consequences on their efficacy in the field.
